The Computer Lab In GHS Buea
G.H.S Buea, is one of the privileged Government High Schools to have an Information Technology Centre (A Computer and Internet Access laboratory). This has been indeed a timely innovation by virtue of the fact that the Twenty First century needs computer minds from all facets of life. It is from this viewpoint that the PTA and the Administration of GHS Buea deemed it very necessary to introduce Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in her precious institution. Our sincere thanks go especially to the Authority of the school, the PTA, ADCOME and MTN Cameroon for their laudable efforts in ensuring that this project comes to fruition. The project aims at bridging the gap between IT and education by ensuring students have access to the Internet, the greatest avenue for information exchange nowadays.

Launching of the Computer/Internet Lab
This School connectivity project (SCP) was launched in Buea last May 2005 and it was very welcomed by the entire GHS Buea family. The direct beneficiaries are the students and staff of the school. Students are given the priority because learning in a computer age as ours, demands that one be current with the modern concepts and facts in various fields of study. So, by acquainting our young secondary school students with IT concepts we are directly preparing them for post-secondary education where IT is best applied in studies and research programmes.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Training in GHS Buea.

Training in IT is being carried out in the school. Theoretically and practically, students and interested teachers are taught the basics of the computer; the structure and its functioning. They thus acquire fundamental principles and skills needed to be efficient computer users as the years progress. Practical sessions, which are absolutely necessary, are part of the training programme. This is compulsory to all learners. Itīs also an enjoyable time when a student sits behind a computer and operates it as one will do with other electronic appliances. The students too have been very curious especially when it concerns practicing on the computers. Given this very important role the IT centre plays in the teaching-learning process in a school setting, and despite the enormous challenges that lie ahead, the school administration will spare no effort at improving on it.

Being an innovation, there have been some difficulties, which are gradually being contained. The computers for instance are limited and this poses a problem when it comes to practicing in the laboratory. Twenty-five computers were provided to the school. This number is very limited considering the number of students (2600) and over a hundred staff who gain access to the computer laboratory. We thus look forward to the provision of more of such microcomputers in the near future and why not even this year.
